Description
Colistin Oral Solution / Premix
Description:
Colistin is a polymyxin-class antibiotic known for its potent bactericidal activity against Gram-negative bacteria. Unlike broad-spectrum antimicrobials, Colistin is a narrow-spectrum antibiotic, which allows it to effectively target and eliminate specific pathogenic bacteria without disturbing the beneficial gut flora excessively.
Mode of Action:
Colistin acts by disrupting the bacterial cell membrane integrity, causing leakage of cellular contents and bacterial death. It is highly effective against Gram-negative pathogens, including Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which are commonly implicated in gastrointestinal infections in farm animals.
Indications:
Colistin is indicated for the treatment and control of gastrointestinal infections in calves, pigs, and poultry caused by colistin-sensitive organisms. It is particularly useful in managing bacterial enteritis, colibacillosis, and salmonellosis.
Target Species:
-
Calves
-
Swine (pigs)
-
Poultry (broilers and layers)
Advantages:
-
Rapid onset of action against targeted bacteria
-
Reduced risk of resistance when used responsibly
-
Minimal systemic absorption; acts locally in the gut
-
Helps improve growth performance by reducing bacterial load in production animals
